SC clears 9th Wage Board for journalists

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court yesterday cleared the way for the government to publish the gazette notification to implement the recommendations of the 9th Wage Board for journalists. The apex court stayed for eight weeks the High Court order that issued status quo on publication of the gazette notification. A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order following a petition filed by the government seeking stay on the high court order of status quo. Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented the government while advocate AF Hasan Ariff appeared for The Newspaper Owners' Association of Bangladesh (NOAB). NOAB president Matiur Rahman had filed a writ peti tion on August 5, challenging  the legality of the ninth wage board.  After hearing on the petition, the HC bench of Justices Obaidul Hassan and Mohammad Ali had directed the government on August 6 to maintain the status quo for two months on publication of the gazette notification.

The HC also issued a rule to the government to explain as to why its move of finalising the 9th Wage Board without giving any opportunity to the stakeholders (NOAB) for placing objections and suggestions should not be declared illegal or unlawful authority.

The secretaries of Cabinet Division, Information, Labour and Wage Board chairman Md Nizamul Haque were told to comply with the rule in four weeks.

On August 8, the government moved the Appellate Division, seeking stay on the HC order. On August 14, the chamber judge of the Appellate Division, Justice Md Nuruzzaman, sent the stay petition to its full bench for hearing on August 19. Recently, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader had said that the 9th Wage Board recommendations will be announced soon.
