Probe report in Ashkona militant den raid case Oct 9

BSS, Dhaka

A court here yesterday set October 9 to submit probe report in a case lodged under anti-terror act over law enforcing agency’s raid at a militant den in capital’s Ashkona area in 2016.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Aminul Huq passed the order as investigation agency Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of police failed to submit the report yesterday. CTTC conducted the raid “Operation Ripple 24” at a militant hideout in Ashkona, in capital’s Uttarkhan area on December 24, 2016. Two militants were killed and another two female militants surrendered during the incident. Dakkhinkhan Police Station sub-inspector Shahinul Islam filed the case against nine persons the next day. The accused are Zebennuhar Shila, Trisha Moni, Shakira, Samina, Afifa Kaderi, Mainul Islam, Rashedur Rahman, Selim and Firoz.

10 witnesses testify in Holey Artisan attack case

Ten new witnesses including four doctors yesterday testified before an anti-terror special court here in a case lodged over 2016 terrorist attack at Holey Artisan Bakery in capital’s Gulshan area.

The witnesses are Dr Masum Billah, Dr Aminul Hasan, Dr Ershadullah, Dr AKM Abdullah Al Masud, additional superintendent of police Md Sattar, additional superintendent of police Abu Taher Faruki, inspector Jamal Uddin, inspector Sheikh Nazrul Islam, inspector Masud Siddiqui and CID assistant DNA analyst Nusrat Yasmin . The witnesses later were cross-examined by the defence counsels. Judge Md Mujibur Rahman of Dhaka Anti-terrorism Special Tribunal after that adjourned the hearing till August 27. A total of 97 witnesses out of 211 have so far testified in the case. Militants killed 20 innocent people, most of them foreigners, in the grisly attack at the cafe on July 1, 2016. Two police officials valiantly laid down their lives while trying to save people there.

Snatching sacrificial goats

BCL leader gets bail

UNB, Dhaka

The High Court on Tuesday granted bail for four weeks to the Mohammadpur thana unit president of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in a case filed over snatching sacrificial goats before Eid-ul-Azha in Mohammadpur area of the city.

The HC bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and SM Kuddus Zaman passed the order when the BCL leader, Mujahid Azmi Tanna, surrendered before the court and sought bail. Anjuman Ara Begum who stood for Tanna said they filed a bail petition on August 18. On August 11, senior warrant officer of Rapid Action Battalion-2 M Farukh Hossain filed the case with Mohammadpur Police Station against nine people, including Tanna. According to the case statement, five goat traders brought a total of 212 goats in a truck from Jashore and Jhenaidah to the capital in the morning of August 11 to sell those ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
