Dengue situation ‘stable’, says DSCC mayor

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayor Sayeed Khokon yesterday said the dengue situation was stable now, adding that operations were carried out in 58,747 houses till last Monday. While inspecting a cleanliness programme at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) marking World Mosquito Day, DSCC mayor Sayeed Khokon said, “You all know that DNCC has been spraying mosquito repellents at each house to destroy the breeding grounds of Aedes since July.”

“DSCC is going all-out to control the dengue outbreak by the first week of September,” Khokon said. “As all organisations of the government, following the directives of the prime minister, are working hard to control the outbreak, we hope we’ll be able to control the situation by the first week of September,” he added.

“Hopefully, the new repellent will work. We’ve been carrying out drives at homes since July and have destroyed almost 1,200 Aedes mosquito-breeding grounds; many buildings were fined when Aedes larvae were detected on their premises. The drive will continue until the entire situation is under control,” he said. The mayor has also said members of the Bangladesh Scout have carried out inspections in 1,11,000 houses to destroy Aedes larvae.

Meanwhile, the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has launched a 20-day ‘combing operation’ to destroy Aedes mosquitoes and their breeding grounds. DNCC mayor Atiqul Islam has said owners will be fined if Aedes larvae are found in their houses during inspection after 20 days.

Atiqul said this while launching a ‘combing operation’ to destroy the breeding grounds of Aedes mosquitoes and cleanliness drive at Dr Fazle Rabbi Park in Gulshan area.
