WH accuses China of
‘bullying’ in S China Sea
AFP,  Washington

The White House yesterday accused China of “bullying tactics” in the increasingly tense waters of the South China Sea and said it would resist Beijing on the dispute.
“China’s recent escalation of efforts to intimidate others out of developing resources in the South China Sea is disturbing,” President Donald Trump’s national security advisor John Bolton tweeted.
“The United States stands firmly with those who oppose coercive behavior and bullying tactics which threaten regional peace and security.”
China has been accused of deploying warships, arming island outposts and ramming fishing vessels in the resource-rich sea, also contested by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam.
Washington has repeatedly criticized China’s attempts to exert growing dominance in the disputed waters, but Bolton’s latest broadside comes as the two economic superpowers face off in a damaging trade war.

Cameroon anglophone separatist leader gets life
 AFP, Yaoundé

A military court in Cameroon yesterday handed a life sentence to the head of the country’s anglophone separatist movement, Julius Sisiku Ayuk Tabe, and nine of his followers, lawyers said.
The 10 were convicted of charges including “terrorism and secession”, the state’s lawyer, Martin Luther Achet, told AFP. The sentence was confirmed by a lawyer for the separatists, Joseph Fru, who condemned what he called a “parody of justice”.
The defendants refused to recognise the right of the military tribunal in Yaounde to try them. Their lawyers have yet to say whether they will file an appeal.
Ayuk Tabe, a charismatic 54-year-old computer engineer by training, was the first self-proclaimed president of “Ambazonia”—a breakaway state declared in October 2017 in two English-speaking regions of the central African country. The government responded with a military crackdown. Attacks by both sides have left 1,850 dead, according to the International Crisis Group (ICG) think tank, while the UN says 530,000 people have fled their homes.

Donald Trump becomes grandfather for 10th time
AFP,  New York

US President Donald Trump has become a grandfather for the 10th time after his son Eric’s wife Lara gave birth to a girl.
“@LaraLeaTrump and I are excited to welcome Carolina Dorothy Trump into the world. We love you already!” the president’s son tweeted minutes before Monday midnight.
It is the couple’s second child—their first, Eric Luke Trump, turns two years old in September.
The 73-year-old president has five children from three different women.
His two oldest children, Donald Jr. and Ivanka, have respectively five and three children.
Eric Trump, 35, is the president’s third child. He is a senior executive at The Trump Organization along with his brother Donald Jr.
Lara Trump, 36, a former journalist, is involved in animal welfare and along with her husband manages the Eric Trump Foundation, which finances hospitals for children.
