He wants to contribute with both batting and bowling

Riyad resumes bowling
with full intensity

In a bid to stage a much-needed comeback with cherry, all-rounder Mahmudullah Riyad resumed his bowling with full intensity ahead of the Tigers’ tight international schedule.

Bangladesh will play a one-off Test against neophyte Afghanistan and then play a tri-nation T20 series against Zimbabwe and Afghanistan in September at home turf. As soon as the end of the back-to-back series and tournament, they will tour to India in November for two-Test along with three-match Twenty20 series.

The Test series in India is important for Bangladesh as the former will embark on their World Test Championship with this series, where Mahmudullah’s bowling is handy for Tigers.

Bangladesh could not have got his bowling service since he sustained injury on his bowling shoulder during the New Zealand series in February. For this, Bangladesh had to pay heavily  from the England ICC Cricket World Cup to the recently-concluded ODI series in Sri Lanka.

As a senior most player of the team, his batting was not up to scrape in the last three-tour series and tournaments which was a big concern for the team management. So his bowling show along with batting performance needed to be honed ahead of the games. Riyad himself also feel the matter and started his bowling at full tilt where he bowled six odd overs without any uneasiness.

After his batting at net, Riyad spoke to media, where he said that he could be bowled in full length in the upcoming series. He also said that he needs to start his bowling because he believes his bowling give him an extra edge in batting.

“Bowling is a big part of my game. I was missing it very much because it provides an extra impetus in my batting,” Mahmudullah Riyad said.

“I think I’ll try to contribute to the team with my bowling. But when I fail to do with bat, I compensate with my bowling. Now I feel well. Hopefully I could probably be bowling in the next series (against Afghanistan),” Riyad told media.

“By the grace of Allah, I’m cent percent fit right now. My pain in calf muscle has been decreased considerably. I did some running yesterday and it’s all good. Physio and doctors also took some test and they found no problem as well,” he added

Even though his focus is on bowling at this moment, Riyad mulls over working with fitness as the upcoming domestic season along with international assignment is approaching.

“We were in a break from where we’ve just come back. I’ll work with fitness in the next few days. Then we’ll work on skills though almost every day we’ve to work on skills,” he said.

“We’ve Test against Afghanistan and Twenty20 against Zimbabwe and Afghanistan. Then we’ve to play Test and T20 games in India. So, we’ve to focus on it in that way. We have to play better cricket,” he added.

When asked about update of his injury, the all-rounder said, “I feel well. I bowled one over in the last New Zealand series though I also bowled in the Sri Lanka series but that was not my proper action. Today I bowled in proper action with proper speed. I feel well to bowl just after a seven-month hiatus. It’ll be better within the next few days.”
