2 get life term for stealing two infants

UNB, Dhaka

A tribunal here on Tuesday sentenced two people to life imprisonment for trafficking two infants after stealing them from Dhaka Medical College Hospital in 2006. The convicts are Jharna Begum from Gazipur's Board Bazar, and Manik from Narayanganj's Fatullah. Jharna was tried in absentia.

Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3 Judge Joyosree Samaddar handed down the verdict. The convicts were also fined Tk 50,000 each. They will have to serve six more months in jail if they fail to pay the fine.

According to the prosecution, Monirul Islam, a resident of Sabujbagh area of the city, filed a case against four people, including the convicts, with Sabujbagh police in connection with the stealing of his newborn from DMCH in 2005.

On January 6 the following year, police arrested Jharna along with a baby boy aged between eight and 10 days from Khilgaon.
