BSMMU VC office vandalism

Sabotage case filed

Staff Reporter, Dhaka

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) authorities have filed a sabotage case against four to five persons and 40–50 unidentified protesters over vandalism in the office of the vice-chancellor. BSMMU proctor Prof. Syed Mozaffar Ahmed filed the case with Shahbagh police station on Tuesday night. Abul Hasan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shahbagh police station, confirmed the news.

“We will take action against those involved after scanning the CCTV footage. No one has been arrested so far,” he said. Earlier, BSMMU authorities had postponed the recruitment of medical officers (MOs) in the face of protests by job-seekers over alleged irregularities in the recruitment process.

Those who failed in the recruitment test are believed to have committed the act of vandalism and have been accused in the case. On June 9, around 15 protesting job-seekers, who were holding a demonstration claiming a massive corruption in the recruitment test, were admitted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after being baton-charged and pushed back by police and Ansar members.

On Tuesday morning, 50 job-seekers continued the protest programme. This time, they demanded the VC’s resignation. Later, the university authorities postponed the recruitment of MOs.  It has been learnt that the protesters vandalised the VC's office around noon. Following the incident, the university authorities filed the case.

Unsuccessful candidates are still demanding a re-examination, alleging irregularities. They complain of gross malpractices, including question paper leak, in the test.
