No room for militancy in Bangladesh: Asaduzzaman

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal yesterday said frustrated people and real terrorists are emerging as militants in a new dimension.

“There is no room for militancy and extremism on the soil of Bangladesh. Law enforcers are working efficiently to resist militancy and terrorism,” he told journalists at a function here.

The function was arranged to mark destroying illegal drugs, seized by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

The home minister said the government adopted a zero tolerance policy against illegal drugs, adding, “Those who will surrender will be given chances, but stern action will be taken against the remaining drug traders and peddlers.”

Among others, local lawmakers Solaiman Haque Joarder and Ali Asghar, BGB director general major General Safinul Islam and officials concerned were present.

Later, the minister witnessed destroying huge quantity of illegal drugs including heroine, yaba, phensedyl.

Stern action will be taken against drug traders: Hanif

Awami League Acting General Secretary Mahbub Ul Alam Hanif yesterday said stern action will be taken if drug trading allegation found against anybody. The ruling party leader said this while he was addressing an anti-drug rally held at the Kushtia stadium this afternoon.

Claiming that Khustia once was a sanctuary of the terrorists, Hanif recalled that nearly 1,000 terrorists including Khustia’s notorious Siraj bhahini chief Siraj surrendered to the then Home Minister Mohammad Nasim with arms in 1999. Since then, the people of the region are living in peace, Hanif added.

At the same time, the surrender of the 222 drug peddlers would help to make a drug free society, Hanif told the rally organized by the district police with Khustia Police super SM Tanvir in the chair.

3 sued for sexually harassing college girl in Sirajganj

UNB, Sirajganj

A case has been filed against three people for allegedly harassing a female college student sexually in Kamarkhand upazila of the district.

The accused were identified as Rafiqul Islam, 44, Hasanur Rahman, 34, and Mahfuz, 20, of Nandina Kamalia village in the upazila.

The case was filed with Sirajganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 and the tribunal ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the allegation.

Plaintiff’s lawyer Indrajit Saha said the victim was walking on the road in front of her house around 9pm on Tuesday when the accused sexually harassed her.

They fled the scene as she started alarm, he said, adding that the trio had also been stalking the victim for long.

SSC examinee ‘commits suicide’

A secondary school certificate (SSC) examinee committed suicide by hanging herself at Ghatail Upazila of Tangail early yesterday.

     The deceased was identified as Ashfia Munna Nipa, 16, daughter of Arsed Ali of Athail village in Ghatail upazila in Tangail district. She was a student of Athail Simul High School.

     Babur Chowdhury, headmaster of the school said Nipa secured GPA 3.39 which was unexpected. She was a meritorious student. But failing to get desired result she committed suicide.
