Riyad rues double chances of winning first match

Sports Reporter, Dhaka

Khulna Titans skipper Mahmudullah Riyad rued for them not to capitalise the chances what they got in the nerve-jangling match against Chittagong Vikings at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur yesterday.

Khulna Titans finally failed to come out of the vicious circle of defeat as they yet another sustained shocking defeat in the phase-ending fixture.

It was fourth loss in a row for the Titans, the match where they had a good chance to bounce back in the competition race with a thrilling victory.

After losing the match, the equation stands before them now was really tough for them to sustain in the current season of the BPL competition because they have to win at least five-six matches out of their next seven-eight matches, which will be held at three different phases in Sylhet, Dhaka and Chattogram.

“After losing three matches in a row, we had opportunity for winning the match. Actually we had chances two times to win the match,” said Mahmudullah Riyad.

“We had needed to defend 19 runs from an over. We didn’t do it. Even, we didn’t do it in super over also. 11-run is not a big target in super over. It was chaseable. But we didn’t do it,” Riyad told media at his post-match press conference.

Riyad thought that it would be better for them if they could finish the first Dhaka phase with a victory.

“It would be better feeling if we could win the match, obviously,” the Titans skipper said.

“It’s really tough for us in the competition. Now we have seven-eight matches ahead of us, from where we have to win at least five-six matches that really tough,” he added.

When asked him about bringing Ariful Haque to bowl in the penultimate over in place of him, Riyad said it deemed to him that Ariful is his best option than him at this situation of the match.

“Off-spin might be difficult at that time. 19 runs from six balls, in such situation, I thought Ariful might be better option because he can make wide Yorker. But it has not been worked properly,” he replied.

He said that they will have to move forward on the basis of the match by match strategy in their next matches they have remained.   “Thereafter, it’s a game of cricket. My message to our team is that we have eight matches ahead,” he said. “It’ll not be right to focus on all the matches. But we have to go forward match by match basis,” he also said.

“Today I told my team mates that a win might be inspired our team. I think what we play we are better side than it. But we could not perform up to the scrape whether it is batting or bowling,” he added.

“It’s really disappointing.”
