BNP leaders in ‘fear of arrests, attacks’

Gazipur-5 candidate Milon arrested
STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

Panic of arrest and attack has gripped opposition leaders and activists of the BNP, and its partners in the Jatiya Oikyafront and 20-party alliance even as they begin electioneering ahead of the December 30 parliamentary elections, claimed the party leaders. Meanwhile, police arrested BNP candidate from Gazipur-5 constituency Fazlul Haque Milon from his residence at Bottul village in Kaliganj upazila yesterday afternoon. Milon, the BNP organising secretary for Dhaka division and its Gazipur district unit president, was arrested in a case filed against him in Dhaka, said police.

The opposition leaders alleged that the government was still on a drive to arrest BNP workers and supporters, although ruling party cadres were attacking election programmes across the country in a bid to, what they said, resist the mass upsurge in favour of their poll symbol the sheaf of paddy.

The leaders accused the Election Commission (EC) of not taking any action against the attackers and measures to stop frequent arrest of party leaders including the opposition candidates.

BNP vice chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu said their leaders and activists were being arrested almost every day.

Both the ruling party and the law enforcers are simultaneously carrying out attacks on opposition leaders and activists and arresting them. Our leaders and activists are unable to hold election campaigns. The ruling party cadres are tearing up posters of the opposition candidates, he claimed.

The BNP leader said it was becoming difficult for them to stay in the election field as, according to him, even the minimum scope for electioneering was absent in the country.

Dudu, however, said that their party decision was to remain in the electoral field till the very last ballot was cast on December 30 despite all the obstacles, attacks, and the arrests spree.

He also warned that they would take their next course of action based on the public opinion as they were taking part in the polls as part of their movement to restore democracy and release their jailed chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Meanwhile, briefing reporters, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi alleged that sensing defeat in the forthcoming polls, the ruling party and the police had increased their attacks on opposition leaders and activists and stepped up the drive to arrest them.

“The police have planned a combing operation against the opposition leaders and activists across the country to resist a mass upsurge in favour of the ‘sheaf of paddy’,” he said.

The BNP leader said that despite allegations being filed, the returning officers were not taking any actions against the attackers.

“We do not get any benefit by filing allegation with the returning officers. Police are not obeying the EC’s instruction and the EC is not exercising its constitutional power,” he alleged.

He demanded the immediate release of the arrested leaders and measures to prevent attacks on their leaders and activists.

Rizvi listed a number of attacks on and arrest of party leaders and activists in different districts including, Chattogram, Chandpur, Sirajganj, Kishoreganj, Naogaon, Kishoreganj, Dinajpur, Netrakona, Jamalpur, Tangail, Jeshore,, Khulna, Dhaka, Sylhet and Joypurhat.
