The High Court yesterday rejected a writ petition filed challenging the allocation of symbol 'torch' to the Hasanul Haq Inu-led faction of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) by the Election Commission (EC), reports UNB. A bench of Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury and Justice Sashanka Shekhar Sarkar passed the order as no lawyer for the petitioner was present at the court. On September 28, 2016, Sharif Nurul Ambia and Nazmul Haque Prodhan filed the writ petition.
On April 28, 2016, the EC allocated the electoral symbol -- torch -- to the JSD faction, led by Inu, after it split into two parts on March 12 of 2016 -- one led by Inu and Shirin Aktar and the other led by Sharif Nurul Ambia and Nazmul Haque Prodhan.
