Demonstrating teachers to ‘resist’ JU Senate meet tomorrow

The 37th annual senate assembly of Jahangirnagar University (JU) will be held tomorrow (Thursday) at the senate hall on the campus. Presided over by JUVC Professor Farzana Isalm, JU Treasurer Professor Sheikh Md Monzurul Huq will proposed budget for the fiscal year 2018-19 while different issues relating campus will be focused at the assembly. Meanwhile, a faction of ruling party backed teachers under the banner of ‘Bangabandhur Adarsha O Mukti Juddher Chetonay Bishwashi Progotishil Shikkhok Shomaj’ announced to resist the assembly with few demands.

They also announced to stage sit-in in front of JU senate hall during senate assembly.

President of the teachers’ group Professor Ajit Kumar Majumder made the disclosure to resist the senate assembly at a press conference held at the seminar room of JU Mathematical and Physical Sciences faculty yesterday.

Their key demands including the matter of nominating three syndicate members among senators to the agenda of the assembly, assuring the punishment of teachers who had involvement in assaulting their fellows recently and withdrawing the recent release order of 2 syndicate members without consulting syndicate.

Professor Ajit Kumar Majumder said, ‘We met the VC on June 12 and proposed her to include the matter of nominating three syndicate members from the senators to the agenda of senate assembly. But she did not pay heed to our proposal’.

 ‘The period of 3 syndicated members nominated from the senators was expired in last year. So, it was very important to nominate three syndicate members from the senators. But, JU VC Professor Farzana Islam did not take initiative to nominate the members’, he said.

 ‘JU VC Professor Farzana Islam has frequently violated university acts, statutes and syndicate conducting rules. Her recent appointment of deans, provosts and transport officials drew controversy as she chose controversial individuals. We also protest such illegal activities by VC’, He added.

They also denounced the autocratic decision by VC Professor Farzana Islam about recent dean, hall provosts and transport officials’ appointment at the press conference.

Meanwhile, JU VC Professor Farzana Islam denied all allegations against her and urged all senators and related individuals to fruitful the senate assembly.

Meanwhile UNB adds:  The syndicate of Jahangirnagar University (JU) is going to place the annual budget for fiscal year 2018-19 on June 28.

The university treasure Prof Sheikh Monzurul Huq will place the budget at a senate session at the administrative building for its final approval with Vice-chancellor Prof Farzana Islam in the chair.

The total budget for the FY 2018-19 was estimated Tk 234 crore which was Tk 232.05 crore in the last year.

The authorities this year is going to allocate only Tk 2 crore which is 0.86 percent of total budget for research sector while TK 75 lakh (0.32%) was allocated in 2017-18 and Tk 56.60 lakh (0.48%) was allocated in 2015-16 fiscal year and Tk 56.50 lakhs (0.45%) in 2014-15.
