Police foiled BNP’s illegal rally, says Quader

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday said police foiled BNP's Thursday rally as it was going to arrange the programme illegally blocking road, reports UNB. "BNP itself is responsible for the incident. Police will surely interfere when any political party stages any programme blocking a busy road. It's illegal to block a road for demonstration," he said. Quader, also Road Transport and Bridges Minister, made the remarks while visiting renovation work on the Dhaka-Narayanganj link road at Egarta in Narayanganj city in the afternoon.

Police are bound to stop illegal activities, he said, adding that Awami League did not block roads for its programme. "We host programmes at certain places."

On Thursday, BNP tried to stage a sit-in near the Jatiya Press Club as part of its demonstration to press home for the release of their Chairperson Khaleda Zia, which was foiled by police. Some activists were detained from the spot.

Quader said police arrested their activists as they are fugitives and wanted by police. "Police won't let them go if they find those fugitives," he said.

About BNP's demand for creating a level-playing field before the next general election, he said it will only happen after the announcement of the polls schedule. "The Election Commission has nothing to do before the announcement of the schedule," he added.
