Bangladesh Cricket Board yesterday decided to terminate its central contract with Tiger all-rounder Sabbir Rahman and banned him from domestic cricket for six months as punitive measures for assaulting a fan during a National Cricket League game. The board also handed Sabbir a hefty fine of Tk 20 lakh. As a result of the ban, the all-rounder will miss the Bangladesh Cricket League and the Dhaka Premier League. However, he will be available for selection to the national team during the ban period. BCB President Nazmul Hassan Papon yesterday said the decision was taken in line with the recommendation by the board’s disciplinary committee.
Sabbir physically assaulted a cricket fan for taunting him on the second day of the sixth and last round fixture of the recently concluded National Cricket League at Shaheed Kamruzzaman Cricket Stadium in Rajshahi on December 21 last year. This not the first time that Sabbir has been taken to task over disciplinary issues. He had faced heavy financial penalties earlier.
