Today is the 82nd birth anniversary of veteran writer Syed Shamsul Haq. Born on December 27 in 1935, Syed Shamsul Haq is one of the most prominent litterateurs of the country. His poems are unpretentious and draw the readers easily. He writes poetry, fiction, plays (mostly in verse), and essays for Bengali literature. His literary works are included in the curriculum of school level, secondary, higher secondary and graduation level in the country. His notable books include ‘Payer Awaj Pawa Jai’, ‘Nishiddho Loban’, ‘Khelaram Khele Ja’, ‘Neel Dongshon’ and ‘Mrigoya’.
His notable poetry includes— ‘Ekoda Ek Rajje’, ‘Boishekhe Rochito Ponktimala’, ‘Birotihin Utsob’, ‘Protidhonigon’, ‘Opor Purush’, ‘Kobita Samagra’ and ‘Ek Ascharja Sangamer Smriti’.
Haq wrote songs including ‘Jar Chaya Poreche Monero Aynate’ and ‘Haire Manush Rongin Fanush’. His notable theatre plays include ‘Payer Awaj Paoa Jay’, ‘Irsha’, ‘Banglar Mati Banglar Jol’, ‘Narigon’ and ‘Judhha ebong Judhha’. The poet in his lifetime was honoured with Swadhinata Padak, Ekushey Padak, Bangla Academy Award, Adamjee Literary Award, Padabali Kobita Award, Nasiruddin Gold Medal, National Poetry Award, Independence Day Award and more.
On 27 September 2016, he died of lung cancer at the age of 81 in Dhaka.
