Neighbours, classmates and teachers of Mayna Akhter, a Class IX student of Pakhimara Prophulla Bhowmick Secondary School, were astonished when she made a pencil sketch of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The local Awami League (AL) office has collected the sketch and kept it.

Mayna is encouraged to make sketches and write poems. When asked, she said she had written poems about Bangabandhu and wanted to publish a book in future.

Mayna is the only daughter of Kabir Gazi of Kumirmara village of Nilganj union of Kalapara upazila. She has already earned a great deal of appreciation for her sketches and poems.

“Bangabandhu was the world's greatest leader. Responding to his call, the people of this country took part in the Liberation War. I have heard stories about how he sacrificed everything for the country. I have drawn his portrait on paper. I respect him from the core of my heart. Now, I'm trying to draw the picture of his daughter, Sheikh Hasina,” she said.

Mayna’s mother, Sheuli Begum, said: “She listens to Bangabandhu's speech on the mobile phone and draws his portrait with pencil in her free time.”

Mayna’s father, Kabir Gazi, said: “We're supporters of the AL. Bangabandhu's speech is recorded in my mobile phone. When I come home, Mayna listens to Bangabandhu’s speech on my phone. Her sketches have been framed and kept in the local Awami League office.”

Badal Chandra Biswas, headmaster of Pakhimara Prophulla Bhowmick Secondary School, said: “Mayna follows the ideology of Bangabandhu. Her art is really incredible. The other students of the school are excited about the spirit of Bangabandhu.”

Nilgonj union AL president Nasir Uddin Mahmud said: “Mayna’s pencil sketch of Bangabandhu is beautiful. It's hard to believe that the little girl is capable of such artistry."
