Young & Independent

In the present era when we can’t think of a single moment without the inventions of modern science, the necessity of science and science education can’t thus be ignored anyway. According to eminent scientists and educationists, science which used to be the most preferred subject at secondary, college and university levels in our country is losing its appeal in an alarming shift of choice. Understanding the current state of Science Education in Bangladesh and in urgency to improve the future trends, EEE Department of East West University (EWU), and the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Student Branch of East West University jointly organized a day-long IEEE-TISP workshop that enlightened the pre-university educators about the applications of since in engineering on August 06, 2010.
IEEE is the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. IEEE and its members inspire a global community through IEEE's highly cited publications, conferences, technology standards, and professional & educational activities. As a part of these activities, IEEE has launched the TISP (Teacher In-Service Program) workshop worldwide to promote science and engineering education. But, it was the first time that this kind of workshop had been held in Bangladesh. Such workshops is very much important in improving the state of science education in our country as weak curriculum and textbooks, weak teaching and assessment methods, lack of properly trained teachers and laboratory facilities, and students' sliding motivation are thought to be some of the main reasons for qualitative and quantitative decline of science education. This workshop will enable the teachers to bring the innovative ideas to the class rooms that will motivate the students towards science and engineering education.
Twenty one pre-university teachers participated in the workshop who were from different schools of Dhaka, Kushtia, Jhenaidah, and Rajshahi districts. IEEE provided eminent resource person Dr. Anis S. Haque from the University of Calgary, Canada initiated the workshop. The program was started with a welcome speech by Professor Anisul Haque, chairperson of EEE department, EWU. Professor Harun Ur Rashid, Chair IEEE Bangladesh Section described IEEE to the participants after the welcome speech. The workshop was interactive and multidimensional where participants lively participated exchanging their experiences.
The day-long workshop was concluded with distribution of certificates to the participants by Professor Ruhul Amin, Dean of Faculty of Sciences and Engineering, East West University.
