Humayun Faridee Passes Away

Renowned actor Humayun Faridee passed away at his daughter's Dhanmondi residence in the capital Monday morning. He was 60.
A domestic help of the house found Faridee lying dead on the floor of his bathroom in the morning.
Faridee was suffering from breathing problem. But reason behind his death could not be ascertained immediately.

China Calls for Dialogue Regarding Syria

China wants an immediate halt to the spiraling bloodshed in Syria and an "inclusive dialogue" between the Syrian government and opposition protesters, an official said.
"We are following closely the situation in Syria and we hope that the violent activities can be put to an immediate stop," said Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai, who is accompanying Vice President Xi Jinping on a US visit.

International Mother Language Day, on the 21st of February, is recognised worldwide and on 17th November, 1999 it was announced as such by UNESCO and its observance was formally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly. The day gives international recognition to our Language Movement Day. The Weekend Independent recently spoke to Shamsuzzaman Khan, Director General, Bangla Academy, regarding the significance of this day.

It might seem incredible to our readers, but Bangladesh is not the only country that celebrates International Mother Language Day on 21st February. Although we remain unrivalled in the passion felt for our mother tongue, other countries and ethnic groups all over the world celebrate the diversity of their languages on 21st February. According to the UNESCO statistics, every 14 days a language dies. Celebrating International Mother Language Day is an opportunity to promote and protect cultural and linguistic diversity.

Yes it’s once again that time of the year when we are reminded of our values through Ekushey February.  Ekushey is a perennial reminder to us of the values we live by as a nation. These are values we had asserted heroically in February 1952 through our spirited defence of our language when it came under threat.

Ever since the birth of Bangladesh, we have been commemorating the sacrifices made on February 21 by offering our heartfelt love and homage to the language martyrs. And Since 2000,  February 21 had become of day of significance for all nations across the world. At the 30th General session of the UNESCO held on  November 17, 1999, Ekushey February was declared as International Mother Language Day.
