Our cover story this week is cervical cancer. Cervix is the lower end of the uterus, which extends into the vagina. Cervical cancer is the second most common in all women and most common in younger women. The cancer is mostly caused by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which may be transmitted by sexual intercourse.

A kidney stone is the result of a super-saturation of minerals and acid salts in your urine, such as calcium and uric acid, which then crystallize and form solid masses. This can happen if you don’t drink enough fluids, and if your urine is highly acidic or highly alkaline. Certain drugs can also increase the likelihood of your developing kidney stones, such as Lasix (furosemide), Topomax (topiramate) etc.

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder that prevents the body from utilizing glucose completely or partially. There are basically two types of diabetes
Diabetes mellitus occurs when beta cells either are unable to produce insulin (Type I diabetes mellitus) or produce an insufficient amount of insulin (Type II diabetes mellitus). As a result, glucose does not enter cells but remains in the blood.

New data highlight increases in hypertension, diabetes incidence
The World Health Statistics 2012 report, released today, puts the spotlight on the growing problem of the noncommunicable diseases burden.
One in three adults worldwide, according to the report, has raised blood pressure – a condition that causes around half of all deaths from stroke and heart disease. One in 10 adults has diabetes.

Cancers occurring in the head and neck region are usually categorised together. They form a diverse group and include cancers of the skin over this region, cancers in the sinuses, nose, mouth, throat, thyroid and salivary glands. Cancers of the brain and eye are usually not classified within the same group.

What is cervical cancer?
Cervical cancer occurs when abnormal cells on the cervix  grow out of control. The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that opens into the vagina.
Cervical cancer can often be cured when it’s found early. It is usually found at a very early stage through a Pap test.

Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women, although the rate has dropped over time as more women receive annual Pap smears. In this procedure, cells are taken from the surface of the cervix and examined for abnormalities. Pap smears are important because the early stages of cervical cancer usually produce no symptoms.

HIV prevention pill Truvada backed by US experts
Dr Robert Grant, Gladstone Institutes: ''I think we are in a era where we can see the end of the Aids epidemic''
A panel of US health experts has for the first time backed a drug to prevent HIV infection in healthy people.
The panel recommended US regulators approve the daily pill, Truvada, for use by people considered at high risk of contracting the Aids virus.
