Continuous erosion of the Meghna River and collapse of concrete cement blocks at places of flood control embankment have posed a threat to 2000 families living in Daulatkhan.
These families have now taken shelter on flood protection embankment on the northern side of Sayeedpur and Bhabinipur union.
Besides, the Daulatkhan upazila headquarters and the under-construction upazila complex are also only 500 meteres away from the river bank of Meghna.
Although the upazila sadar and police station complex are facing the threat of erosion the authorities have constructed new police station at the cost of Tk 6 crores and upazila complex at Tk 5 crores at the same venue, sources said.
Locals said they have shifted their homesteads two to three times over the past three years due to continuous erosion. During the time hundreds of acres of cultivated land were also devoured into the river, they added.
When contacted, Mostafizur Rahman, upazila nirbahi officer and Monjurul Alam Khan, upazila chairman of Daulatkhan said Ali Azam Mukul MP of Bhola-2 constituency visited the spot several times, but no measure was taken to check erosion.
Besides, a vast tract of cultivable land in Medua, Madanpur and Sayeedpur unions of the upazila has also been devoured by the Meghna River.
