SHeikh Iraj
How did you get into the music business? And who inspired you?
From a very early age, I have a deep passion towards music. My family noticed that and they have motivated me ever since. When I was in class three, I got admitted to Shishu Academy in Rajshahi. There I became familiar with different kinds of music and Rabiul Hasan, a popular music teacher in Rajshahi, taught me the basics. As I grew little older, I joined Shilpakala Academy in Rajshahi and soon I was

enlisted as a child artist by Bangladesh Betar. As I said, I am extremely passionate about music, so I used to follow any news that was associated with music. Then I came to know about Channel i Shera Kontho. The first time I auditioned I was selected among the top 20, but due to my SSC exams, I decided not to continue. Then after completing my HSC in 2010, I participated again and became the second runner-up. That’s how I entered the music industry.
What’s your take on the record industry today? And what are your thoughts on downloading music online?
I believe the advancement of technology is also changing the face of music. Today one can purchase albums on the internet. New musicians are coming from every corner of the country, which is a very positive sign. There are two sides of downloading music. Now if the company who has released the album has set a certain price for downloading the album or songs, and you are paying that amount to download, then you are doing the right thing. Which everyone should do. But if you are downloading that song or album without paying anything just because it’s on some random website, then it’s called piracy. Let me tell you, as a musician it really feels bad, even some of my songs are now on YouTube and on some other websites without my permission.
What advice would you give to other singers trying to get a start?
I do not feel I am experienced enough to give advice to others. But let me share with you what has worked for me. Stay positive, take academic training, continue the practice and never give up.
Please tell us about your recently released debut solo album.
Before this album, I have worked on seven mixed albums, jingles and songs for movies. I had thought about releasing a solo album, but I was not completely ready. The name of my debut solo album is ‘Ayna Firey’, there are eight songs on it. I am receiving positive feedback from listeners and my peers. That is very important to me, because I believe positive feedback can extremely motivate someone and it helps you to do better work.
What are your future goals?
One of the songs of my album is ‘Ami Gaan Wala Mehedi Hasan’. It has become popular and people have now started calling me Gaan Wala (singer) Mehedi Hasan, I am enjoying this. I want to became a singer whom people would love, and I will try to entertain people with my songs as long I can.
