The Second National Surfing Championship organised by Bangladesh Surfing Association (BSA) will be held at Laboni point of Cox’s Bazar beach from April 21 to 23. The BSA has almost completed all preparation work to make the championship a success. In the fact the BSA is organising the meet with an aim to boost the country’s tourism sector as the government has already declared the year as “Tourism Year.” BSA president Kazi Firoj Rashid, MP, stated this to media at the National Sports Council conference room in the capital yesterday. Moazzem Hossain Rokon, general secretary of BSA, Md Saifur Rahman, DGM Sales of BRAC Dairy & Food Project, the sponsor the title sponsor the competition and Parvez A Chowdhury, principal of National Hotel & Tourism Training Institute, also spoke on the occasion. He said like previous year a star-studded Hawaii based team of Surfing The Nations (STN) has already arrived in the country to supervise the competition. The STN team will hold a special training session from April 12 for the participants. “In fact the STN people are here to hold the competition as well as to see the safety of the local surfers,” said Rashid, a former minister. The BSA president further added that in future the association may extend the competition to Kuakata and St Marin beaches.
He praised the STN members training method which attracted more surfers to take part in the game this time. “Last year only 44 competitors took part in the maiden event and this year over 150 promising boys and girls have confirmed their participation,” the BSA president told the media.
Parvez A Chowdhury urged more people to visit Cox’s Bazar and take part in the surfing. “I can assure that you can participate in the meet without any fear as there is no shark or quick sand at Laboni point, Moreover the STN members would be available all the time to look your safety.”
Kate Amm, a South African member of the STN, said the people of Bangladesh are very much eager to take part in this game. She observed this during her last visit to Cox’s Bazar. Replying to question she said that there are a few international standard male surfers in Bangladesh, who can easily bring laurel for the country. Brittany Southwick, Teka Gabaldon, Ashley Erickson of USA and Jamie Sullivan of Canada and Bangladesh champion Ramzan also narrated their different experience of  surfing to the media.
