The Kolkata flyover tragedy

The Kolkata flyover tragedy

We extend our whole-hearted sympathy to the families of victims of flyover tragedy that struck Kolkata on Thursday. According to reports, about two dozens people perished when an under-construction flyover on the Vivekannada Road at Burrabazar collapsed trapping hundreds of people underneath steel frames and concrete slabs. As the construction site of the flyover under CCTV camera, everything of the tragedy was recorded vividly: people, cars, buses, auto rickshaws, hawkers were just crushed under the weight of the collapsed flyover. It is indeed a big tragedy for the people of Kolkata. While the flyover collapse has been described as an ‘accident’ or ‘an act God’ by the Hyderabad-based company which is constructing this piece of infrastructure flyover, the reality is the company will surely be brought to face music. The Kolkata police have already registered a case against this construction firm. The forensic report of the accident site would soon be prepared and the investing four-member police team, that has sealed the local office of the construction firm, is making headway in finding out the underlying reason behind the tragedy.
At the aftermath of the tragedy, as expected another important thing would be done as well. The victims will be compensated in financial terms, either by the Pashcimbanga government or by the construction firm, or by both. In fact, Mamata Banerjee, the state’s chief minister, has already announced sums for the dead and the injured ones. Though every life that got perished on the fateful day was invaluable and will never come back and financial compensation would in no way give solace to the near and dear ones of those who lost their lives in the flyover debris.
In Dhaka, the Kolkata tragedy has reminded us falling-off of the Bahaddarhat flyover in Chittagong in 2012 which claimed at least 17 people. It is pertinent to express here flyovers are now being constructed here in Dhaka and will be constructed in future as well. It is expected that while doing this heavy engineering work, utmost caution and foolproof safety measures will be taken.
Once again we extend our fullest sympathy for those who died in the Kolkata tragedy.
