Dhaka: A non-governmental organisation has conferred Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) Chairman Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad with the ‘development friend’ title for his contributions to the rural development in Bangladesh, reports UNB. Development Organisation of the Rural Poor (DORP) conferred the title on him at a workshop ‘Strategic Plan 2016-2020’ held at its office in the city yesterday. DORP founder AHM Noman presented a crest along with the title to Kholiquzzaman at the workshop. Quazi Rosy, MP, Planning Commission Member Dr Shamsul Alam, Prof Zaheda Ahmed and DORP President M Azhar Ali Talukdar were, among others, present at the programme, according to a DORP press release. Speaking on the occasion, Qazi Kholiquzzaman said only 9 percent people of the country received the microcredit during the 1990-2008 period. “Microcredit can’t alone eradicate poverty. Only saying to send poverty to museum is not enough. We’ll have to work to make that happen,” he said. The economist said PKSF is now working more independently and mentioned that it has started work by setting up ‘progress’ centres in 150 unions throughout the country for improving skills, ensuring education and health with proper credit facilities for the poor.
