The 15th convocation of East West University was held yesterday morning on the permanent campus of the university at Aftabnagar, Dhaka, says a press  release.
A total of 1311 undergraduate and graduate students were conferred degrees, and three of them won gold medals.
On the occasion the university has gained the glory of receiving the permanent certificate upon fulfilling all the requirements.
Those private universities who are yet to fulfill the criteria have been given an ultimatum of one year to complete all the necessary requirements; if fails, the government will take action against those universities, said Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid.
Professor  Abdul Mannan, chairman, University Grants Commission (UGC) and special guest at the convocation, stated that the private universities ought to provide scholarships to facilitate the financially insolvent meritorious students.
Renowned educationist and the convocation speaker, Dr Muhammed Zafar Iqbal advised the graduating students to enjoy the pleasure of being able to do something for others in our brief human life.
The chairperson of the Board of Trustees of East West University and former governor of Bangladesh Bank, Dr Mohammed Farashuddin stated that the intolerance prevailing in our society in recent times is quite depressing.
He expressed hope that the students of East West University will be inspired by honesty, skill and patriotism, and will play a key role in building a liberal and democratic social structure.
Vice-chancellor of East West University, Dr M M Shahidul Hassan urged the students to apply their acquired knowledge for the socio-economic development of our blood-bathed motherland.
The members of the Board of Trustees, the treasurer, deans of all the faculties, chairpersons of all the departments, teachers, staff, graduating students and their parents attended the convocation ceremony.
The students expressed their joy upon receiving their certificates in due time after their academic life.
