4-day festival begins in city

To remember the Natyacharya of Bengali theatre, Selim Al Deen on his death anniversary tomorrow, a four-day festival is being arranged at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), Segun Bagicha in the city. Organised by Dhaka zone of Bangladesh Graam Theatre and Dhaka Theatre, Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor inaugurated the festival at the Experimental Theatre Hall of BSA yesterday. The much-acclaimed play titled ‘Nakshikanthar Math’—based on a masterpiece by Poet Jasimuddin—was staged by Bunon Theatre from Savar. The play is directed by Anan Zaman. Today, Jalalpur Theatre from Jamalpur is going to stage the play ‘Somoyer Sanglap’ at 5pm at the Experimental Theatre Hall of BSA. The play is written and directed by SM Abdullah. On the other hand, Drama and Dramatics Department of Jahangirnagar University (JU) will bring the play ‘Kobi’ on the stage at 7pm. The play is written by Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay and directed by Yusuf Hasan Arko.
Tomorrow, a procession will be brought from the old arts building of Jahangirnagar University to the graveyard of Selim Al Deen on the university premises to place floral wreaths at 10am. On the same day, a seminar titled ‘Ekti Hridoy Duiti Ovidhan’ will be held at the Conference Hall of BSA at 3pm.
Shahid Samar Theatre from Jamalpur will stage the play ‘Birangana Bimalara’, written by Abdullah Faraji and directed by Asadullah Faraji and Shahin Rahman, at the Experimental Theatre Hall of BSA at 5pm, while Dhaka Theatre’s ‘Usha Utsab’ will be staged at 7pm on the day of Selim Al Deen’s death. ‘Usha Utsab’ is written by Selim Al Deen and directed by Samiun Jahan Dola.
On the other hand, the programme of the concluding day has been scheduled to take place on the Liberation Museum premises at Segun Bagicha on January 15. Bangla Theatre from Faridpur will stage the play ‘Krishti’, written and directed by M Nizam, at 5pm, while Desh Bangla Theatre will stage the play ‘Kangkal O Sare Tin Haat Mati’ at 7pm. The play is written by Rashidul Islam Raja and directed by Mehedi Tanjir.
Born on August 18, 1949 in Feni, Selim Al-Deen, known as ‘natyacharya’, joined Jahangirnagar University in 1974 as a faculty in Bangla department and later on became the founder chairperson of the Department of Drama and Dramatics of the University.
‘Shorpo Bishoyok Golpo’ (Story about Snakes), his first play for the theatre, was staged in 1972. Dhaka Theatre was founded by him in 1973. Dhaka Theatre, the leading theatre group of the country plays a pivotal role towards progressive drama movement and has staged almost all of Selim Al –Deen’s plays. His plays like Kittonkhola, Bashon, Atotai, Saifulmulk Badiuzzaman, Keramat Mangal, Haat Hodai, Chaka, Joiboti Koinnar Mon, Hargaj, Muntaserer Fantasy, Nimojjan and others enhanced the quality of the local theatre. He passed away on January 14, 2008. l
