KEEPING SOCIAL DISTANCE

Army, police to go tough from today

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

Army and police will take a tough stance with effect from today to ensure people’s home-stay and help them keep social distance as part of containing the spread of coronavirus. Sources in the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) and police confirmed this yesterday.

In a statement, ISPR said the military will strictly ensure home quarantine for those, who came back from aboard, while also ensuring people’s social distancing in all parts of the country from today (Thursday). The ISPR also said strict action will be taken against those, who disobey the health hygiene guidelines as provided by the government.

Earlier on March 24, army was deployed to help civil administration ensure social distancing and bolster the coronavirus preventive measures.

The government later announced a 10-day holiday, which started since the country’s Independence Day on March 26 and was due to be continued till April 4. Later, the government decided to extend the holiday on April 9.

Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam has directed his officials to strictly check the movement of people as part of efforts to contain the spread of coronavirus. The DMP boss issued the order yesterday during a meeting with senior police officials at the DMP headquarters.

He said everyone has to stay at home. “Relief will be distributed maintaining a certain level of distance from one another. Police will cooperate in this regard.” Asked, Md Sohel Rana, AIG (media) of police headquarters, told The Independent that the police is primarily applying all possible means to make people aware. All police personnel are now on the road to help implement the government directives with regard to checking coronavirus spread.

"To ensure that people maintain social distancing, we are approaching them with tolerance and respect. We are checking whether people are coming on the street without any emergency necessities," he said.

According to him, people have to come forward by themselves, too, for their own good. “Police is trying its best. But most often police don't get proper cooperation from people, who usually don't like to get challenged by police even for any violation they make.”

DMP’s Additional Commissioner (crime) Krishnapada Roy confirmed the matter saying that the police officers were asked to impose strict restrictions on people’s movement.
