Assaulting journos in Barishal

Three cops closed

Three members of Barishal Metropolitan Police (BMP) have been closed to police lines yesterday and a probe committee was formed to investigate into the incident of assaulting of two photo journalists on Friday. The closed three police personnel were identified as Nayek Mohsin, Constable Kawsar and Constable Jahid of Barishal University Police Camp. The assaulted two photo journalists are-- Shafin Ahmed Ratul of local daily Desh Janapad and Nasiruddin of local Daily Dakhhiner Mukh.

Shafin Ahmed said they went to Barishal University area to collect photo about corona prevention awareness programme on Friday evening. At that moment, some police personnel suddenly charged batons and injured them even after giving their identities as journalist. He said after that they informed the matter to their newspaper offices. Mosharraf Hossain, UNO Barishal Sadar, said,  “He was not informed about the incident instantly. However, after knowing the matter from the victims on Saturday night, I expressed my regret and will ask authority concern to take action against the persons responsible”.

 Sahabuddin Khan, commissioner of BMP, said, “Journalists and police working jointly in this crisis period.  We sought apology if any police man had involved in assaulting journalists”. “We already formed a probe committee to investigate into the allegation, led by Mokthar Hossain, deputy commissioner of BMP, and asked him to submit report within next five working days”, BMP commissioner added. None would be forgiven if any police personnel found involved in this incident, he added. Barishal Reporters Unity and Barishal Press Club condemned the brutal action of police and demanded rapid action and exemplary punishment of the persons responsible for assaulting journalists.
