Coronavirus tests begin in Rangpur, Rajshahi tomorrow

BSS, Rangpur

Testing of coronavirus (COVID-19) infection of suspected patients will begin in Rangpur and Rajshahi from tomorrow as the installation works regional laboratories have already completed.

In Rangpur: The Coronavirus (COVID-19) test will begin on Wednesday at the Laboratory of the Department of Microbiology of Rangpur Medical College (RMC) in the city. Principal of RMC Prof Dr AKM Nurunnabi Laizu told the news agency yesterday, “We have already completed installation of a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) machine and received kits to begin testing of COVID-19 infection here from Wednesday”.

The experimental test of COVID-19 infection will be conducted today (Tuesday) at the RMC laboratory by trained physicians, technologists and other employees concerned before going to official testing from Wednesday. “We will be able to test COVID-19 infection of 90 suspected patients at a time with their samples of throat swabs, blood and sweat and cough to get confirmed results in a day,” Dr. Laizu added.

In Rajshahi: The laboratory is being installed at the Department of Virology in Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) as the machine for Polymerase Chain Reaction testing, widely known as PCR, has already been reached here from Dhaka.

Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, Fazley Hossain Badsha, MP, RMCH Director Brig Gen Jamilur Rahman, Principal of Rajshahi Medical College Prof Dr Nawshad Ali and RCC Chief Engineer Ashraful Haque visited the installation site on Sunday afternoon to see for themselves the progress. “We are hoping for starting the test upon successful completion of the preparatory works and arrival of the technologists by Wednesday,” said Mayor Liton.
