Fascinating tale of ‘bee house’

OUR CORRESPONDENT, Tangail
Fascinating tale of ‘bee house’

Bees have taken control of a house in Delduwar upazila for the past decade, leaving alongside its human inhabitants.  And they have attacked no one by this time.

The owner of the house is Badol Chokroborty of Pachuria village. His family appears to have benefited by the bee occupation. They consume and sell the honey produced by the bees. At present, there are about 50 beehives on the property.

Badol built the one-storied building in 2009. Soon after, the bees started building their hives in the house.

Currently, 28 hives occupy parts of the building and about 20 hives are on trees within the property.

When the bees first arrived, the residents were afraid. But the bees were gentle and did not attack any inmate of the house, any villager, or any visitor. The beehives fascinated enthusiastic visitors.

“The beehives have created a new source of income. We consume the honey and sell it in the market. The natural honey is delicious and in demand,” said Badol.

“I harvest about three to four mounds of honey per annum. That's a small quantity. I am not aware of the proper nursing, collection, and preservation methods as I have no training in beekeeping. It might be possible to collect more honey if I get proper training,” he added.

Locals said that the bees have not built hives in the neighbouring houses or on trees nearby. They appear to have singled out Badol’s property.

Abdur Razzaque, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (Tangail), said, “The taste and food value of naturally grown honey are good. Bees do not attack if they are not attacked by anybody.”

“The owner of that building can earn a great deal. If he wishes, the DAE can provide the necessary training and logistic support,” he added.
