4 killed in Dhaka road accidents

Staff Reporter, Dhaka

Reckless driving at night in the capital is proving fatal for unsuspecting commuters. Four people, including two women, became victims of rash driving in separate road accidents in the capital in the last couple of days. The two women were killed in a road accident in the Mohakhali area. The deceased were identified as Duldana Akhter Kochi (38), territory officer of Pearl International Limited and a resident of Kishoreganj, and Sonia (32), a resident of Bhola.

Sonia used to live with her brother in Shah Ali area in Mirpur, while Kochi lived in Kalyanpur area. The duo were travelling by a scooter and met with the accident near Bridge Bhaban, confirmed Banani police station sub-inspector (SI) Afzal Hossain. Injured critically, the women were taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), where the duty doctors pronounced them dead around 1.30am, said DMCH police outpost in-charge Bachchu Mia.

In Demra, two youths were killed as a sand-laden truck hit their motorcycle from behind at Konapara on Tuesday night. The victims’ are identified as Akash (21) and Oishik (19). The accident took place around 10pm on Tuesday. Both were taken to DMCH, where Akash was declared dead around 1:30am and Oishik died around 3:20am. Their bodies have been kept at the Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy. The police are trying to identify the killer vehicles after analysing CCTV footage of the two women killed in Mohakhali. Already, CCTV footage has been collected from the possible location of the accident.

Banani police station OC Noor-E Azam Mia said the bodies of the two women would be handed to their family after autopsy. Sources said that a speeding bus had hit the scooter, which was headed towards Mohakhali, in front of Bridge Bhaban around 12:45am, leaving the women critically injured. The victim had a sticker of press behind the scooter.

Advocate Nurul Amin Bhuiyan, uncle of Kochi, told reporters that he got a call from somebody from his village home at night after seeing the news and photos on Facebook about the accident. He later identified the body of Kochi in the DMCH morgue. “Kochi was single and lived in Kalyanpur. Sonia was her friend. They stayed together for a long time,” he added.

He said Kochi used to return home from the office before 11pm. However, He could not say why she was so late last night. “The bodies of the two girls were laid in a crowded place for hours. People were just staring at them, but nobody could tell how the accident had taken place. I think there are many CCTV cameras in the vicinity and footage from them will throw light on the incident,” he added.
