‘UPDF man’ among two killed in separate ‘gunfights’

UNB, Rangamati, Kushtia

Two persons, including a member of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF), were killed in reported gunfights with law enforcers in Rangamati and Kushtia districts early yesterday.

In Rangamati, a UPDF member was killed in a reported gunfight with law enforcers at Maisbhanga in Sadar upazila of the district. The deceased was identified as Arpan Chakma alias Babudhon Chakma, also an accused in Naniarchar upazila Chairman Shaktiman Chakma murder case filed on May 3, 2018. Sources said the gunfight began around 5am when a group of criminals suddenly opened fire on a patrol team from Shuvolong camp, prompting the law enforcers to fire back in self-defence.  As the team commander informed Shuvolong camp about the attack, another patrol team joined them, said Additional Superintendent of Police (Rangamati) Mohammad Shafiullah.

After the criminals fled the scene following the 15-20 minute gunfight, the patrol team recovered Arpan Chakma’s body, Shafiullah said.  One foreign-made pistol, locally made firearms, several round of bullets, cartridge and other equipment used for criminal activities were recovered from the scene, he said.

Later, locals identified the UPDF member’s body. They said Arpan along with his associates had been engaged in extortion in the Banasbhari area of Bandhukbhanga.

On May 3, Shaktiman Chakma, also a leader of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (MN Larma faction), was shot dead by unidentified miscreants in front of the upazila parishad complex.  In Kushtia, a suspected drug peddler was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Bagoan village in Doulatpur upazila of the district.  The deceased was identified as Shahidul Islam alias Shahid, 34, son of Manik Ali of Jamalpur village in the upazila. Police said he was wanted in 14 criminal cases.

SM Arifur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Doulatpur Police Station, said they conducted a drive in the area around 3am acting on a tip-off.  Criminals opened fire as soon as the police team reached the spot, triggering a gun battle. At one stage, Shahid suffered gunshot wounds. Later, police took him to a local hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. A pistol, two bullets and 50 bottles of Phensedyl were recovered from the spot.
