ACC investigates wealth amassed by Papiya

Cases against Enamul, Rupon
Staff Reporter, Dhaka

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is looking into the wealth of expelled Narsingdi Juba Mahila League General Secretary Shamima Nur Papiya. “Detectives are also monitoring people who are close to Papiya. Her associates will also be subjected to the law," said ACC Secretary Mohammad Delwar Bakth. He was talking to the journalists at the ACC head office in the capital’s Segunbagicha. The ACC secretary said that Papaya's wealth, source of income, and her money abroad were all under investigation.

“The commission is taking action against corrupt people. It'll investigate Papiya's source of money. If any name(s) surfaces in this regard, action will be taken against them,” he added. Papiya used to amass wealth through unfair means of extortion, drug peddling, arms trading, blackmailing, and other criminal activities. She believed to have developed good relations with many ruling party and Juba League leaders by paying them money. She also ran a prostitution racket at various luxury hotels in the capital by using her political identity.

Sources said that the detectives had evidence that she took undue advantage from influential quarters. Meanwhile, RAB yesterday handed over the seized Tk 26.55 crore in cash, fixed deposit receipts (FDRs) worth Tk 5.15 crore, one kilogramme of gold, and foreign currencies, recovered from a house of former Awami League (AL) leader Enamul Haque and his brother Rupon in Dhaka’s Wari area, to the Wari police. The RAB-3 officials handed over the money in presence of RAB Executive Magistrate Sarwoer Alam. There will be two separate cases filed against those accused in this regard, informed Sarwoer.
