COMMERCIAL, TECHNICAL COOPERATION

Bangladesh, Qatar to sign pact soon

DEEPAK ACHARJEE, Dhaka

The government is planning to sign an agreement on economic, commercial, and technical cooperation with Qatar soon to strengthen the friendly relations between the two countries.

Already, the Qatar authorities have sent a draft agreement to the Bangladesh authorities, seeking their opinion in this regard, according to sources in the foreign affairs ministry.

After receiving the draft agreement, it was sent to the Economic Relations Division (ERD) for their opinion, the sources said.

Talking to The Independent, a senior ministry official said they had recently received the ERD’s views, which would be conveyed to Qatar soon. “After receiving the response from the Qatar authorities, the process of signing the draft agreement will begin,” he added.

As per Article-2 of the draft agreement, both parties shall cooperate in economic, commercial and technical areas of mutual interest and benefit in the fields of bilateral trade and investment, financial services, air services, energy, information and communication technology, transport, construction, agriculture, industry, culture, sports, tourism promotion, and education and training. Article-3 of the draft agreement says: “The parties will promote and facilitate the export and import of their industrial and agricultural products as well as raw materials.”

Under the draft agreement, both parties will encourage the cooperation between their government and private institutions and agencies of public interests engaged in technical activities, in technical and economic joint projects, as well as in the exchange of delegates in different technical disciplines to provide the required assistance and support.
