HC acquits four out of five in a killing case

Staff Reporter, Dhaka

The High Court (HC) yesterday acquitted four out of five death row convicts of their charges over the murder of 15-year-old Shah Jamal in Jamalpur 10 years ago. They were awarded death penalty by a trial court in 2015. The bench also commuted the death penalty to life term imprisonment for the remaining suspect for the murder.

The HC bench comprising Justice Krishna Debnath and Justice Muhammad Mahbub-Ul-Islam passed the order after hearing the appeals and death references of the case.

Those who got acquittal order from the HC are: Saddam, Zakir Hossain, Miran and Shetu while Fazle Rabbi Shishir got life imprisonment.

Advocate SM Shahjahan and Barrister Badruddoza Badal appeared for the suspects while Deputy Attorney General Md Bashir Ullah represented the state during the hearing on the appeals and death references.

Deputy Attorney General Md Bashir Ullah told reporters that the government would file appeals against the High Court verdict in the killing case.

Tenth grader Shah Jamal Swadhin was murdered in Shokal Bazar area of Jamalpur Sadar on the night of March 23 in 2010. Saiful Islam, father of Swadhin filed a case with the Jamalpur sadar police station against the five accused. Later police arrested them in connection with the murder.

On January 20 in 2015, the lower court sentenced the five accused to death in connection with the case. Later, they filed appeals with the HC against the lower court verdicts. After hearing on their appeals and death references the HC bench yesterday came up with the verdict.
