Donor countries and organisations contacted for funds

Bridge linking Bhola to Barishal on cards

The government is going to construct a bridge at a cost of Tk 12,916 crore to link Bhola and Barishal. The bridge will establish direct road connectivity between Barisal and Bhola over the rivers Tetulia and Kalabador, said sources in the road transport and bridges ministry. For the funds to build the bridge, the road transport and bridges ministry has already asked the Economic Relations Division (ERD) to send letters to donor countries and organisations, the sources added. A senior ministry official told The Independent that the bridge would be a priority project of the Prime Minister. “It will help establish an economic zone in Bhola district and also boost the tourism sector in the area,” he added.

“We are trying to arrange funds from donor agencies and countries,” he said. A senior official of the ERD said that they already sent proposals of the project to different donor agencies like the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and AFD-French Agency for Development.

Different donor countries like China, Netherlands and Japan have also been contacted, he added.

“But we are yet to receive any response,” he noted.

The Netherlands government has already expressed regret for being unable to provide any funds for the project as Bhola

is an island that is detached from the main-land,” he also said.  “We will send a letter to the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), a multilateral development bank with a mission to improve social and economic outcomes in Asia, seeking the required funds soon,” the official added.

Sources said the road transport and bridges ministry had prepared a preliminary development project proposal (PDPP) for taking further steps in this regard.
