No Shaheed Minar in most Tangail schools

Students of a large number of educational institutions in 12 upazilas of the district are being deprived of the knowledge of the historic Language Movement as these do not have a 'Shaheed Minar' (martyrs' monument) on their premises.

Among 1,629 primary schools under the upazilas, 1,516 do not have such monuments. 'Shaheed minars' could be seen in only five out of 173 schools in Ghatail, six out of 150 under Sakhipur, seven out of 161 in Goplapur, three out of 79 in Basail, 13 out of 164 in Sadar, five out of 100 in Delduwar, seven out of 179 in Mirzapur, 26 out of 172 in Kalihati, 10 out of 110 in Madhupur, seven out of 156 in Nagorpur, two out of 110 in Bhuapur, 22 out of 85 schools in Dhanbari.

Among 805 colleges, schools, and madrasas under the upazilas, 430 educational institutions have established Shaheed Minars.  Language hero Dr Mirza Mazharul Islam, who is a recipient of Ekushey Padak, said that the people of Tangail had played a heroic role in the Language Movement and the Liberation War. "It is shameful that a large number of educational institutions here cannot set up Shaheed Minars. Establishing such monuments in every school should be made mandatory," he added.

Tangail DC Md Shahidul Islam said that he was not aware of the matter. He also said that he will inspire every educational institution to set up martyrs' monuments and provide monetary help. He urged affluent people to help schools establish such monuments on their premises.
