The election to the Chandpur municipality will be held on March 29, according to the Election Commission (EC).

The current tenure of the municipality ends in April.

District election officer Helaluddin Khan told this correspondent that the polling would be conducted through electronic voting machines (EVMs) as it had been comfortably used by voters at the recently held Haimchar upazila parishad election in the district.

District election office sources say there are 116,122 voters under the Chandpur municipality. Of them, 59,161 are male voters and the rest female voters.

The district election officer said there were adequate (1,400) EVMs in his office to conduct the poll in 600 polling booths in the 15 wards of this municipality.

The probable candidates for the posts of mayor and councillors are getting ready to woo voters.

Almost all the probable candidates who are preparing to launch a campaign are from the ruling party.

In contrast, the BNP has two or three candidates for the mayoral post, say party insiders.

The incumbent Chandpur mayor, Nasiruddin Ahmed, who is also the president of the district unit of the AL, expressed his desire to contest again for the mayoral post. He said he wanted to contest again to carry forward the on-going development projects in the municipal areas.

Nasirussin Ahmed had already been elected mayor three consecutive times.

The other mayoral aspirants are AL’s district education affairs secretary advocate Zillur Rahman Jewel, district organising secretary Tofazzol Hossain Patwary, Jubo and sports secretary Masud Alam Milton, and district AL member advocate Mujibur Rahman Bhuiyan.

On the other hand, the probable mayoral candidates of the BNP-led alliance are central leader Shafiqur Rahman Bhuiyan, and BNP town unit president Akter Hossain Majhi. Another BNP mayoral candidate is advocate Babor Bepari.

Most mayoral and councillor candidates are showing keen their interest in the election through Facebook posts and by putting up coloured banners and posters in the town. All the candidates are now eagerly waiting to get the green signal from their respective parties.

Like Jamaat-e-Islami, Ganoforum will provide silent support to the mayoral candidate nominated by the BNP-led alliance.
