The ruling Awami League nominated mayoral candidate for Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Rezaul Karim Chowdhury has promised to build a ‘clean, green and healthy’ city if elected in the polls slated for March 29. “If I am elected, the port city Chattogram will be rebuilt in a planned way,” Rezaul Karim Chowdhury said while talking to The Independent yesterday. Seeking cooperation from all to rebuild the port city, the AL mayoral candidate said he will do everything needed to make the city a modern one where all standard amenities will be ensured for the citizens. “Chattogram was a cultural city, I will work on it,” he added.

He also promised to complete all the unfinished tasks of city incumbent mayor AZM Nasir Uddin to make the city livable, secure and modern. “Waterlogging is one of the major problems of Chattogram city and I will give priority to address the problem. By improving drainage system I want to reduce waterlogging during rainy reason,” he said, adding that he will take advice from experts to resolve the issues.

He also promised to prevent the city’s environment pollution and reduce traffic congestion. The AL candidate said building new playgrounds for children in all areas of city, returning the footpaths to the citizens, bringing back discipline in the roads and ensuring safe journey for the commuters, and taking different development projects for the city will be his major tasks. Meanwhile, Rezaul Karim Chowdhury yesterday collected the party’s ‘final nomination’ form from the AL President Sheikh Hasina’s political office at Dhanmondi in the capital. Talking to reporters after collecting the nomination, Rezaul Karim said he is hopeful about his victory in the upcoming CCC election.

The last date for submitting nomination papers of the mayoral aspirants in the CCC election is February 27, while the nomination papers will be scrutinised by the Election Commission (EC) on March 1, according to the election schedule.

Appeals against the EC’s scrutiny have to be made between March 2-4, while decisions regarding the appeals will be given between March 5 and 7, the EC said. The last date for withdrawal of candidacy is March 8, while the candidates will be allotted their election symbols on March 9.

Like the recently held Dhaka city corporation elections, electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be used at all polling centres in the CCC polls. The last CCC election was held on April 28, 2015. The current CCC’s five-year tenure will end on August 5, 2020. The port city has more than 1.8 million voters.
