Teacher groups face off at RU

OUR CORRESPONDENT, RU

Two factions of Rajshahi University (RU) teachers yesterday brought allegations against each other regarding involvement in corrupt activities on the campus.  A human chain, arranged at Paris Road under the aegis of a pro-Awami League teachers' form, demanded punishment for corrupt teachers. All the teachers present were loyal to current RU vice-chancellor (VC) Prof. M Abdus Shobhan. Another group of teachers, loyal to former VC Prof. Mohammed Mizanuddin, stayed in front of the VC's residence to protest against an illegal viva board that had been formed to recruit teachers at the crop science of the varsity.

At the human chain, Prof. Kazi Jahidur Rahman, a teacher of the computer science and engineering department, said: "Prof. Mohammed Mizanuddin and his loyal teachers were involved in corruption while setting up a coffee shop, martyrs' monument, and guest house in Dhaka for RU teachers. A few of our colleagues are raising voice against the current VC, even though they are keeping mum about the corruption promoted by the former VC."

"I request the RU administration to take action against them for their involvement in corruption," he added.

Prof. Arifur Rahman, provost of Shah Mukhdum Hall, said: "Some teachers who don’t believe in the ideology of Bangabandu are raising their voice to cover corruption committed earlier. They are trying to create unrest on the campus."

"The former administration took money from students in the name of issuing smart digital identity cards. But those cards were never issued. The teacher who is being the most vocal under the banner of ‘Teacher against corruption’ had allegedly earned Tk. 0.75 crore through irregularities. The matter is being investigated," he added. But teachers loyal to Prof. Mizanuddin denied such charges and levelled counter-allegations against those who attended the human chain. On their part, Prof. Ali Asgar said the current university administration was appointing teachers in exchange of money. "They have sold their souls to money. They appointed teachers defying a High Court directive," he alleged.

He also alleged that the university authorities had called a student of the crop science department for viva voce whose master’s examination’s result was published three months after the online application date had ended.
