BCL to start Jan 31

Final likely to be played by pink ball
Sports Reporter, Dhaka

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is all set to host the eighth edition of the Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL), a franchisee-based longer-version cricket tournament and comprised of four zonal teams, is scheduled to be played from January 31. The BCB and its sponsor Walton, yet to come out to a conclusive decision, are planning to hold pink-ball final match for the second time after the 2013 edition and also in a discussion to telecast the final match on TV.

“We’re going to kick start the BCL from January 31. It seems we (BCB) are going to take charge of both North and South Zone this season since Prime Bank is longer a franchisee now and it’s our commitment to run the competition even without them. But if any franchise shows any kind of interest within this short period of time, they will be welcomed, Khaled Mahmud Sujan on behalf of the tournament committee chairman told reporters at the SBNCS press conference room yesterday.

“I presided the meeting on request of the tournament committee chairman. But, definitely this is one of our best franchise based first-class tournaments. So, obviously we want to arrange such tournament. We came here to discuss whether the tournament can be televised or not because it would be good both for the franchises and Bangladesh cricket for more exposure. Even if we can air the final match, it will be great.” “The BCL is important for our young cricketers too. We’re looking forward to arrange it in best possible ways because we don’t have enough time at hand,” Sujan further added.

Talking about the live telecast and pink ball final match, Walton Executive Director Uday Hakim told reporters, “We’ve received a proposal whether the final match could be played with the pink ball. If the players   raise no objection or agree to play, then there is a good possibility of the pink ball final match”. “Actually, we don’t get too much from the BCL. Mainly, we organize the tournament for the development and welfare of Bangladesh’s cricket. So, if the final match could be aired, we would have got a positive feedback. We raised the demand too and they are thinking of it,” Walton Executive Director, while replying to another said that the BCB has taken their proposal in a positive manner.

Four Zones named Central Zone, South Zone, East Zone and North Zone take part in the competition. South Zone has the highest success rate of lifting the trophy for four times while Central and North Zone emerged champions as two and one time respectively. A total of 80 players will take part in the longer version tournament for which they have to meet the requirement of the fitness test, which will be held in Mirpur on January 26. Therefore, the players’ draft for the BCL will be held at the media block of the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mipur on January 27. The league will progress on single league basis. Cox’s Bazar, Sylhet and Chattogram will host all the matches of the meet, where players will enjoy new match fee what they demanded to the board.
