Theatre Art Unit, a popular theatre troupe in the country, will stage its praiseworthy production ‘Golapjan’ this evening at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in the capital. The proceeds from the show will be given to the welfare fund of theatre artistes.

From the story written by Abu Taher, the play ‘Golapjan’ is scripted and directed by SM Solaiman. ‘Golapjan’ is a memoir of the livelihood of old Dhaka city. Golapjan, an ordinary woman of old Dhaka, portrayed carefully the struggles through her childhood, adolescence and youth, and into her old age up to the age of 65 years. ‘Golapjan’ is a portrayal of a working woman of the mid-20th century living in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, her struggles living through the development process of the capitalist society.

Meanwhile, Dhaka was changing. The global explosion of technology hit Dhaka in the middle of the 20th century. Rickshaws replaced carts. So Golapjan’s husband becomes a rickshaw-puller. Then one day he lost a leg in an accident. The whole family then depends on Golapjan.

Another side of Golapjan was revealed. Since the state and society had no responsibility to take care of other people, she had to look after her family herself. Golapjan becomes a symbol of the struggle in that Dhaka conservative society. Neglecting the social barriers, Golapjan set up on the street as a snack seller. Golapjan became a part of the labour struggle.
