A suspected cattle thief was lynched and another was injured after being beaten by a mob at Chandrapur village in Jhikargachha upazila early yesterday. In a space of ten days from January 13 four persons were lynched on suspicion of lifting cattle in the district.  The deceased was identified as Ilias, 30, son of Fazlu Mistri of Krishnagar village in the upazila.  Insan Ali, a resident of Chandrapur, said the thieves entered his cow shed around 2 am.

“He got up hearing his cows mooing and caught the thieves with the help of locals. They beat up the duo before handing them over to police,” said Touhidul Islam, Additional Superintendent of Jashore Police.  Injured Ilias and Abdul, 30, were taken to Jashore Medical College Hospital but Ilias succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital.

Earlier, three suspected cattle thieves were beaten to death by a mob at Prembagh village of Abhaynagar upazila in Jashore district on January 13. Two of the deceased was identified as Sohel, 30, and Shaikat, 32, hailing from Khulna district, said police. The identity of the third victim could not be known till filing of this report yesterday afternoon. Tajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Abhaynagar Police Station, said a gang of thieves came to Gaidgachhi in Abhaynagar around 4am and stole three cows from the house of one Khorshed Ali. As the residents of the house sensed the theft, they shouted for help. Villagers learned about the theft attempt as announcements were made on a loudspeaker of a nearby mosque. Villages then came out of their houses and chased the thieves, the OC said. At one stage, the mob caught three people, allegedly thieves, near a level crossing in Pregbagh of Majumdarpara and gave them a mass beating. Two of the alleged cattle thieves died on the spot during the beating. Another suspected thief, severely injured in the mob beating, died while being taken to the hospital. Police recovered the bodies and sent those to Jashore Medical College Hospital Morgue for autopsy. Law enforcers also seized a pickup truck, which was allegedly brought by the suspected thieves to transport the cattle.

A case was filed over the lynching, said Mohammad Touhidul Islam, Additional Superintendent of Police (DSB), Jashore. Police arrested one Joney Shaikh in this connection, he added.
