Expatriates in Canada hold protest

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

Some Bangladeshi expatriates in the Canadian city of Toronto yesterday formed a human chain to protest the act of settling in Canada by some individuals after laundering money from Bangladeshi banks and other financial institutions. The protesters staged the human chain holding posters, placards in Toronto's Danforth area which is also known as the “Bangali Para” of Toronto.

The protesters urged the Canadian government to take legal action against launderers. Talking to The Independent, Shawkat Ali Sagar, one of the organisers, said they plan to hold another programme on this issue next Friday.

Earlier, the expatriates started social campaigns with the demand of taking legal actions against the money launderers and demanding their boycott.

Recently, a businessman in Chattogram moved to Canada having default loans of Tk 800 crore with 12 Bangladeshi banks. The news created a major outcry in media.  Shaugat Ali Sagar, an expatriate in Toronto, wrote in his facebook post that after reading such news in the Bangladeshi media, they thought of “voicing concern and staging some sort of protest in Toronto.”
