Eminent playwright and theatre personality Professor Momtazuddin Ahmed, who passed away last year, was remembered on his 86th birth anniversary on Saturday. Theatre, a prominent theatre troupe in the country, organised a programme to celebrate the late icon’s first birth anniversary after his demise.   

Featuring documentary screening, music, recitation and theatre performance, the programme was held at Nilima Ibrahim auditorium of Mahila Samiti in the capital’s Baily Road.   

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen attended the programme as chief guest, while theatre personality ‘Mancha Sarathi’ Ataur Rahman, Mamunur Rashid, Director General of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Liaquat Ali Lucky and Group Theatre Federation General Secretary Kamal Bayazid were present as special guests.

 The birth anniversary celebration began with the screening of documentary on Momtazuddin titled ‘Chokher Aloy Dekhechilem’ directed by Prabir Dutt.  

 Singer Anima Mukti rendered the Tagore popular number ‘Ami Opar Hoye Bose Achhi’-one of Momtazuddin’s favourite songs. Then, Munira Yusuf Memy and Zahid Hasan Shuvon read out the drama ‘Boloner Bou’ written by Momtazuddin Ahmed.  

 The programme concluded with the staging of some parts of  a play written by Momtazuddin.   

 Born in January 18, 1935 in Chapainawabganj, Momtazuddin Ahmed completed his master’s degree in Bengali literature.

 He was a professor in the department of Bengali at Jagannath University and a part-time lecturer at the department of Music and Dramatics at Dhaka University.  He taught Bengali, Sanskrit, and European drama in several non-government and government colleges for over 32 years.

 Ahmed wrote 25 plays for stage, radio and television and directed several of them. He died on June 2 in 2019 in Dhaka at the age of 84.
