Seven killed in road crashes in 3 districts

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

Five women, including three members of a family, were killed and 15 others injured in road accidents in Jashore, Gopalganj and Sylhet districts on Friday night and Saturday. Our Correspondent in Jashore reports: Three members of a family were killed and four others were injured in a road accident at Shahid Mashiur Rahman Road near NSI office in Jashore town at around 1 am on Saturday night.  

The accident took place when a private car hit an electric pole and then crashed at a boundary wall in the area, said Abdul Kader, a relative of the deceased. He said that the family members were returning home when the accident took place. The deceased were identified as Tanjila Yeasmin, 30, her sister Tanima Yeasmin Piasha, 25, and Afroza Tabassum Tithi, 35, wife of Manjur Hossain, family and hospital sources said.

Mofazzel Hossian, medical assistant at Jashore General Hospital told The Independent that the trio was brought dead at the hospital at around 1.15 am. Five people including Shafiqul Islam who was driving the vehicle were injured in the crash.

When contracted Additional Police Super (DSB) Touhidul Islam told this correspondent that the driver of the vehicle lost control over the wheels as he was over speeding.

Meanwhile in Gopalganj, two women were killed and 10 others were injured after a bus hit a roadside tree in Dhennabari area of Sadar upazila around 10:30 am, said Sajedur Rahman, inspector of Boiltoli Highway police.

One of the deceased was identified as Romesa Begum, 50.

In Sylhet, two students of MC College were killed after a

private car overturned at Tilagar in the city on Friday night.  The deceased were identified as Nayan Das, 27, son of Iresh Das and Rubel.

Abdul Kaium, officer-in-charge of Shahporan Police Station, said the private car overturned at 11pm as its driver lost control over the steering, leaving four students severely injured.  Locals rescued them and took them to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College where doctors declared Nayan dead while Iresh died on Saturday morning at the hospital while undergoing treatment.
