86th birth anniv of Momtazuddin to be celebrated today

To celebrate the 86th birth anniversary of eminent playwright and theatre personality Professor Momtazuddin Ahmed, theatre troupe Theatre has organised a celebration programme today at the Nilima Ibrahim auditorium of Mahila Samiti, Baily Road in the capital.

The celebration programme will feature documentary screening, music, recitation, theatre performance and others.

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen will attend the event as chief guest, while theatre personality Mancha Sarathi Ataur Rahman, Mamunur Rashid, Director General of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Liaquat Ali Lucky and Group Theatre Federation General Secretary Kamal Bayazid will be present as special guests.

Born in January 18, 1935 in Chapainawabganj, Momtazuddin Ahmed completed master’s in Bengali literature.

He was a professor in the department of Bengali at Jagannath University and a part-time lecturer at the department of Music and Dramatics at Dhaka University.  He taught Bengali, Sanskrit, and European drama in several non-government and government colleges for over 32 years.

Ahmed’s career as a teacher, writer as well as an actor earned him wide recognition, but theatre is the most prolific part of his career. As a man of progressive conviction Ahmed took an active role in the state language movement of Bangladesh, struggle for freedom during Pakistani era and movement for getting back democracy in post-independence Bangladesh.

Ahmed wrote 25 plays for stage, radio and television and directed several of them. He died on June 2 in 2019 in Dhaka at the age of 84.
