Call to ensure basic rights of ‘char’ people

BSS, Rajshahi

Speakers at a participatory discussion in the city yesterday unanimously underscored the need for ensuring all the legitimate rights of the people living in char (riverbed) areas in the district for improving their living and livelihood condition. They mentioned emphasis should be given on reaching the existing public services related to agriculture, health and education to the char people through formulating a char development policy on priority basis.

The views were expressed at a stakeholder workshop by development activists, public representatives, grassroots political leaders and community people at the conference hall of the Department of Agriculture Extension. Many of the Char alliance members in Rajshahi district took part in the workshop. National Char Alliance (NCA) and Unnayan Shamannay jointly organised the workshop in association with Agriculture Sustainable and Socio-economic Development Organisation (ASSEDO) and Samata Nari Kolyan Sangstha (SNKS).

NCA Member Secretary Zahid Rahman, ASSEDO Executive Director Rabiul Alam and SNKS Coordinator Selim Hossain addressed the workshop as resource persons with Bagha Char Alliance Convener Emdadul Haque in the chair. Valiant Freedom Fighters Towhidul Islam, Toybur Rahman and Royez Uddin and Godagari Char Alliance Convener AK Tota also spoke on the occasion. The discussants observed elevating overall living and livelihood condition of the char people can be a vital means of achieving sustainable development goals. All the government and non-government entities concerned should come forward and work together to this end.
