The BNP yesterday announced that the party would hold a countrywide demonstration on Sunday for its Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s release from jail. It said that the government would be compelled to hold an election afresh under a neutral government and an impartial Election Commission (EC) by scrapping the result of the 11th national polls. And the goal would be attained through a movement involving the countrymen, the party leadership said.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir warned of the movement after a meeting of the party standing committee at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office in the capital in the evening.

The highest policymaking body of the BNP held meeting hours after party Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s bail plea was rejected by the Appellate Division (AD) of the Supreme Court (SC).

According to Fakhrul, Khaleda was denied justice and that the party was aggrieved at the apex court’s latest decision.

He said the government weakened the judiciary, grabbed the administration and was creating pressure on the media. Also, he said that the government, by scrapping the caretaker government system through the 15th amendment to the constitution, threw the country into a permanent conflicting situation.

Alleging that lodging cases was one of the government’s big weapons, he said that it remained in power by lodging false cases and having grabbed the administration.

Meanwhile, the BNP leaders and activists in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country staged impromptu demonstration following the apex court’s decision.

Leaders and activists of the BNP and its front organisations, including Chhatra Dal, Jubo Dal and Mohila Dal, took to the streets in different parts of the city and staged demonstrations. They took out processions soon after the court verdict was announced.

Speaking at the protest rally organised by the BNP, the party's senior joint secretary-general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi called upon everyone to join the movement for the release of Khaleda Zia.

Party leaders, workers, and supporters chanted slogans demanding immediate release of the former premier and her better treatment.

The Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), led by its central president Fazlur Rahman and general secretary Iqbal Hossain Shamol, brought out a protest rally on the Dhaka University campus. At one stage, they were dispersed by the police. l

Earlier, the AD of the SC rejected Khaleda’s bail pleas in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case. The six-member Appellate bench, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, passed the order after hearing the petition.

The BNP leaders and activists brought out a protest procession, led by Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, in the Bangla Motor area around 1:30pm.

He slammed the current government for increased repression and implicating Khaleda in false cases.
