ACHIEVING SDGS IN ASIA-PACIFIC REGION

Speakers urge investment in small and medium-sized industries

In order to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Asia-Pacific region, investment in Small and medium-sized industries should be increased, said speakers.

At the same time, it is necessary to discourage investment in destroying forests, promoting child labor, and drug, they said.  

The speakers came up with the observation while speaking in a three day-long conference on ‘The Asia-Pacific Conference on Financing Inclusive and Sustainable Development” at the Hotel InterContinental in Dhaka yesterday.    

Former adviser to the caretaker government AB Mirza Md Azizul Islam said in his speech that to achieve SDGs in Asia-Pacific region, investment in Small and medium-sized industries should be increased and such an economic environment has to be created so that small and medium entrepreneurs can get involved in the economy.  

He said there is a need to invest in such fields where even the most marginalized people can get involved. It is important to invest to technical development, diversify products, establish equality for women in the economic field and to prevent poverty.

 “In addition, it is necessary to discourage investment in the drug sector, chemicals production which is harmful for public health, promoting child labor and destroys forests,” he said.

During the programme, Planning Minister MA Mannan said under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, there has been a huge development in the country. Particularly in infrastructure, access to electricity from village to village, education sectors.

He said that Bangladesh will become a developed country within 2041. And he sought everyone cooperation.

Manmohan Parkash, Asian Development Bank (ADB) Country Director for Bangladesh said we are working to achieve SDGs of Asia-Pacific region through investment.

Bun Chanhi, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Commerce of Cambodia, Professor Dr. Pushpa Raj Kadel, Vice Chairman of the National Planning Commission of Nepal and Md Ali Toslim, Professor of Independent University of Bangladesh were spoke, among others.
